Start from the institution’s own page

Find the official museum or scenic-area website first, then follow its booking instructions. Save the institution’s Chinese name so that you can distinguish it from an agency or an unrelated attraction. For the Shaanxi History Museum, that name is 陕西历史博物馆.

Check the venue, date, entry slot and ticket type. A free general admission reservation may have different conditions from a special exhibition. Paying for an add-on does not automatically mean every gallery or service is included.

Use the document you will carry

Names and document numbers should match the document you intend to present. The Shaanxi History Museum’s guide explicitly distinguishes mainland IDs from passports and other accepted documents for non-mainland visitors. Use the appropriate option rather than forcing a passport into an ID field.

The museum lists five documents it accepts for booking: the mainland resident identity card, the Hong Kong and Macao residents’ travel permit, the Taiwan residents’ travel permit, a passport, and the Foreign Permanent Resident ID. Mainland visitors may book only with an identity card. Everyone else may use the permit that applies to them, or a passport. The same list applies at the main museum and at the Qin and Han branch.

Keep your confirmation available offline and bring the required original document. If a reservation system cannot handle your details, use the institution’s published assistance channel or ask for help with that specific step. Do not send identity documents through a general travel enquiry form.

Book the place you actually intend to visit

The Shaanxi History Museum’s main venue and its Qin and Han branch are different destinations. Confirm the address on the reservation before arranging transport. Similar names on a booking platform can hide a very different journey.

At the Terracotta Army, check the museum’s own admission information and any exhibition notices. At other attractions, verify their rules individually. There is no universal booking window or closure day that applies to every museum in Xi’an.

Shaanxi History Museum: rules checked 14 September 2026

The main museum releases reservations five days ahead at 17:00 China Standard Time (UTC+8) through its official WeChat account, 陕西历史博物馆. Prefilling visitor details is not a confirmed reservation: check the successful-order page. Prefill records that never become a confirmed order are cleared automatically at midnight, so an unfinished prefill is not held for you.

The museum also publishes limits that matter for families and groups. One document number may hold a single reservation per day, and may succeed at most four times in any 30 days, cancellations included. One WeChat account may succeed at most three times in any seven days. A single prefill record can carry up to five visitors.

The Qin and Han branch currently allows entry without advance reservation using an accepted original identity document, including a passport for overseas visitors. Its location and entry arrangements differ from the main museum. Recheck the official visitor guide before travelling.

The museum states that it has not authorised third parties to sell tickets or provide bundled paid services. Use the official reservation channel for the main museum.

Cancellations, no-shows and paid exhibitions

If your plans change, cancel through the official order page before ticket checking closes for your reserved slot. The museum treats a booking that is neither cancelled nor used as a no-show, and states that a no-show blocks new reservations for the following 180 calendar days. Cancelling in time avoids that.

The museum sells two paid displays separately: the Tang murals gallery and the special exhibition. Both use real-name purchase, online or at the museum. Buying a paid exhibition ticket online removes the need to make a separate free reservation for the main museum, which is worth knowing when the free slots have gone.

Opening hours, last admission and getting there

For the season the museum published as running from 6 May to 14 November 2026, the main museum is open 08:30–19:00 and stops checking tickets at 18:00. The Qin and Han branch is open 08:30–18:00, with last entry at 17:00. Public-holiday hours are announced separately, so check the current notice for your date rather than relying on these ordinary-season times.

Both venues are reachable by metro, but the walk still counts against a timed entry slot. The main museum is about 778 m from Xiaozhai station on lines 2 and 3, and about 834 m from Dayanta station on lines 3 and 4. The Qin and Han branch is about 666 m from Qingong station on line 14.

If a document or ticket type causes a problem

The museum publishes a fallback for a missing original document: go in person to the comprehensive service window at the South Gate with an electronic identity credential or a police-issued identity certificate, together with the successful order, and exchange it for an entry voucher before ticket checking. A photograph of a document is not the credential that notice describes.

Several visitor categories are exempt from booking, but the museum defines most of them through mainland identity and status documents. Do not assume an exemption applies to a passport holder. The museum’s published enquiry number during working hours is +86 29 85253806; confirm your own case before travelling.

Build an itinerary around confirmed slots

List your two highest-priority visits, find their reservation windows and set a reminder for yourself. Once you have a confirmed slot, fit the other activities around it. Keep one flexible alternative that does not depend on the same sold-out reservation.

XianBeyond asks for at least seven days’ notice to arrange travel services. This is our planning lead time, not a museum ticket-release window or a guarantee of admission. You can discuss your itinerary before reservations open, then adjust it to the slots you actually secure.

For any travel arrangement, distinguish guide fees, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Ask what is confirmed and what is still being requested before relying on the proposed itinerary.
