Two full days, two areas
This route assumes you have already arrived and have two full sightseeing days. Spend one in the central city and one east at the Terracotta Army. You can swap them to match ticket availability. Staying near a metro station matters more than choosing a hotel with “ancient city” in its name.
Reserve the museum visit before arranging a tightly timed day around it. Keep the booking confirmation and the identity document used to reserve. If you arrive on the first morning, reduce the city programme rather than rushing directly from the airport to a museum slot.
Day one: wall, streets and dinner
Begin at the South Gate, Yongningmen, and choose a manageable section of the wall. Walking lets you stop at the gates and look between the older street grid and the modern city. A complete circuit is optional, and bicycle availability and conditions should be checked on the day.
After lunch, explore Shuyuanmen if calligraphy and small shops interest you. Continue towards the Bell and Drum Towers, allowing for street crossings and pauses. End with dinner in the lanes around the Muslim Quarter. These are neighbourhood streets, so be considerate of residents and worshippers.
Day two: give the archaeology time
Use the Terracotta Army as the main event. Travel, entry checks, walking between exhibition spaces and lunch all take time beyond the headline museum visit. In Pit 1, first take in the arrangement, then look for differences in posture, clothing and restoration.
If energy and access allow, include the wider mausoleum area described in the museum’s visitor information. Avoid promising both a substantial second attraction and a distant evening show. Returning to Xi’an for an uncomplicated dinner is a complete day.
Adjust without losing the essentials
In hot or wet weather, shorten the wall section and take longer meal breaks. If travelling with children, let them choose details to find in the figures rather than asking them to absorb every dynasty date. Agree a meeting point before entering busy halls.
For departure that evening, work backwards from the required airport or station arrival time. The excursion is outside the city centre, so do not treat a connection as guaranteed. With a narrow margin, move the warriors to day one and keep the city day last.
